Dhanurmasa: Spiritual Significance
Dhanurmasa is the very auspicious one month period which has a great spiritual significance. The period starts when Sun enters Dhanu Rasi or Saggittarius sign. This period is also called Dhanur sankramana. Sun enters this sign aroung Dec 14-16 every year and it will stay in the sign till January 14-16. It is also the end of Dakshinayana. It starts with Margashira Shukla edadashi (Eleventh day of bright half of the lunar month)
Importance of Dhanurmasa
Krishna says in Bhagavat Gita as, “I manifest the most in the month of Margashirsha among the months of a year”. Spiritually Dhanu month has much significance. This month is highly auspicious to perform spiritual activities. Sages have dedicated this month only for devotional and spiritual activities. Non devotional activities such as marriage, property purchase or other functions are prohibited. This is because our sages wanted us not to waste this time on material pursuits. This is the reason it is called as Shoonya masa.
Dhanurmasa pooja should be performed in the Brahmi muhurta. Brahmi mururta will be 1½ – 2 hours before sunrise. For devathas, our 1 year is equal to 1 day. Our uttarayana means davathas day time and our dakshinayana means devathas 1 night. So this month coincides with their brahmi muhurta. There is a union of human and gods brahmi muhurta in this time. So it is best if we perform dhanurmasa pooja before sunrise.
During this period, the sky will be very pure. There is a positive vibration at this time.
Dhanu or Saggitarus is a spiritual sign. It is the 9th house of the natural zodiac. Sagittarius sign is ruled by Guru or Jupiter. It is the house deals with higher mind, philosophy, science and religion. It is a fiery sign, which means it burns our ignorance and leads us into light. The symbol of Dhanu rasi is arrow and bow, which signifies our mind aiming for higher self. The nakshatra or stars associated with this sign are Moola, Poorvashadha and Uttarashadha. The nakshatra play a significant role over our subconscious mind. The meaning of Moola is the root or starting point and the symbol is the bunch of roots tied together. So when Sun enters this star, our quest for higher self will get started. Then Sun enters Poorvashadha which is ruled by Venus. The meaning of Porvashadha is the early victory. And then Sun enters Uttarashadha star which is ruled by Sun itself. The meaning of uttarashadha is the latter victory. Here the victory is over the evil. It is the transformation from material life to spiritual life.
What is to be done on this occasion?
Most of the temples will perform the Dhanurpuja in the early mornings. You can participate in the Poojas. Or you can chant Vishnu sahasranama by yourself. Also, this is the best time to do meditation. If possible, sit is a quite serene place outdoor and meditate. If you don’t want to do anything of these, then just go outside and do some outdoor activities. Basically you have to experience the bliss in the outside world.
