Significance of Sun
Sun is the prime luminary in the Solar system and gives light and heat to other planets and heavenly bodies. It is considered as king of planets as all the planets including Earth will be revolving around the Sun. Sun is called as universal atma or soul as everything in this world depends on the Sun.
Sun takes one year to complete the cycle of twelve zodiacal signs and thus moves at the speed of 1° per day and completes one sign in thirty days. Special significance is given at the entry of the Sun in every sign of zodiac which is called as Solar ingress or Sankramana. It will be helpful in studying human affairs and mundane matters. The transit of Sun in Capricorn or Makara (Makara Sankramana) is the starting of Uttarayana period (period of northern solstice). Similarly the Sun’s transit through Cancer is starting of Dakshinayana period (southern solstice). Uttarayana period is said to be very sacred and auspicious period to perform any functions.
Sun is considered to be tall, fiery in nature with yellow eyes, bilious nature with scanty hair. He represents Soul, self, one’s personality, ego, power, leadership qualities, self-realisation. He signifies who you are as a soul. He also signifies father and the qualities or genes gained from the father’s side. Sun is a vast and majestic planet represents royal status, magnetism, authority, royal favour, power, fame, honour etc. Sun signifies political career, bureaucracy, govt. properties, favours from Govt. etc. If Sun is debilitated or weak, then trouble from Govt arises.
Sun is a male planet rules over Leo sign, exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra. It represents copper, red colour, pungent taste, silken cloth, wheat, gold, fire, poisons, medicines, worship of Lord Shiva, thorny trees, gold ornaments, physician, ambassador etc.

Our Solar system is centered around the Sun and the planets and heavenly bodies move in an elliptical orbit around the Sun. It controls the motion of all the planets and it provides light to them. Sun is called as Ruthukaraka means one who is responsible for various seasons like spring, summer, autumn and winter. Sun is located at the edge of the Galaxy called Milky Way which is in the form of spiral arm. The distance between the Sun and the galactic center is about 30,000 light years. The diameter of the Sun is 865,000 miles, its volume is 1,3000.000 times the mass of the Earth. It is producing energy by a nuclear reaction, converting hydrogen into helium and losing its mass at the rate of 4 million tons per second.
