Mars in Vedic Astrology
Mars is called as ‘Mangala’ or ‘Angaraka’ or ‘Kuja’ in Vedic astrology. These three names signify three forms of energies. Mars signify energy and is the representation of activity. Mars is a male planet and represents hasty and quick nature. He represent blood, courage, dynamism with absolute vitality and vigour.
It has been said in scriptures:
Dharaneegarbha Sambhootam Vidyuthkaanthi Samaprabham,
Kumaram Shaktihastam Cha Mangalam Pranamaamyaham
Which means that Mars is born from the womb of the earth, radiant, shining like the brightness of an electric spark and has strong hands having powerful weapons.
Even to move our body energy is required. This energy is provided by Mars. Mars is also about competition, ambition, courage and it is also about survival. Mars gives determination and passion to work towards any goal.
Mars can be both constructive and destructive. As we know, energy can be both used for positive or negative purposes. Just like fire or electricity which can be used for both purposes, Mars also represents both energies. When it is used positively, it is called as ‘Mangala’ which means auspicious. Whereas if it is used negatively it is called as ‘Kuja’.
Mars signify sexual energy too. It represents sexual desires and instincts. The same sexual energy can be also be used to activate the chakras especially Muladhara chakra. The dormant kundalini rests in Muladhara chakra, so the energy can be used to activate the Kundalini. Depending on the strength of Mars in horoscope, the natives urge for sexuality can be seen.
Mars is the fourth planet in order of distance from the Sun. It is the closest outer planet from the Earth. Its distance from the Sun changes from 127,000,000 miles to 153,000,00 miles. Its diameter is 4,200 mile. Its sidereal period of revolution is 687 days and synodic period is 780 days. There are two satellite of Mars, named Deimos and Phobos.
In Hindu Mythology, Mars is called as Mangala or Angaraka. He is called as Bhumiputra or Bhouma. He is born from Mother Earth. The birth of Mars is said to be in Avanthi country on Akshaya samvatsara, Shravana shukla Trayodashi, in the star of Poorvashadha, in Bharadwaja gotra. He has four hands, rides on golden chariot, blood red in colour, posited south in the solar system or graha mandala. He signify Narasimhavatara in dashavatara.
Mars is positioned 3rd in the order of planets after Sun and Moon. Sun represents soul and Moon represents mind, body complex. In the evolution, when soul and consciousness formed, Mars gives the energy required to create the body and move the body.
Mars rules over Toor dal, mild red colour cloth and coral. His weapons are mace, trishula and sword. The mandala is triangular or trikonakara. Vehicle of Mars is red ram. Shakti is the wife of Mars. Shakthi devatha is Dharma, adhi devatha is Prithvi, pratyadhi devtha is Skandha, abhimana devata is subramanya. Number of Japas to be performed is 10,000, number havans to be performed is 1000 and number of tarpans is 100. Sacred wood for performing havans is Khadira.The charu or the offering for Mars is jaggery rice without removing starch. The idol should be made of red sandal or raktha chandana. The flower for puja is red karaveera. Auspicious day to start puja for Mars is on Tuesday on Swathi star. The nama Japa for graha shanti is ‘Om Mangalaya Namaha’ and the number of japas is 1008.The gift to be given is Ox.
Mars rules over Mesha (Aries) and Vrishchika (Scorpio), exalted in Makara (capricorn), debilitated in Kataka (Cancer), Mooltrikona sign is Mesha. His dasha period is 7 years. Sun, Moon and Jupiter are his friends; Venus and Saturn are neutral and Mercury is his enemy.
