Mercury in Vedic Astrology (Budha in Jyothish)
Budha is also called as ‘Soumya’ which means son of Soma (Chandra). Budha or Mercury is known as messenger of the Gods in astrology. It is the fast moving and closest planet to the Sun in solar system.
Mercury is also a name of element or metal, which also holds similar characteristics of a Planet Mercury. Mercury as a metal gains the shape of a vessel it holds. It does not change because of its association with other elements. It can transform iron into Gold, yet it remains Mercury. Mercury is like a Yogi, neutrality is its quality. He is in absolute sink with both extremes. When Mercury is associated with other planets, it behaves like other planet. But it does not lose its inherent characteristic. Mercury as a neutral planet, does not have any prejudice. it just reflects characteristics of the other planets like crystal.
Budha is said to be the son of Chandra (Moon). Chandra was the disciple of Brihaspati or Jupiter, who is known as Guru. Tara (or Taraka) is the wife of Jupiter. Chandra was very good looking and handsome and Tara was attracted to Chandra. They both fell in love and Moon took Tara along with him. After becoming aware of the situation, Guru got angry and started war with Chandra. The war became very big and everyone started taking side. Shukracharya (Venus) along with asuras joined Chandra and other Gods joined Brihaspati. As the war was extending without any end, Lord Brahma decided to mediate. He then convinced Tara and took her to Guru. But by then, Tara was pregnant. As a result, Budha was born. Now both Guru and Chandra claimed that they are the father of Budha. But Tara revealed that Chandra was the father.
It may look as just a story. But we have to extract the hidden meaning from this story. Jupiter is the teacher who instills his teachings which is called as ‘Wisdom’ within us. So wisdom is represented by his wife Tara. Chandra is our mind. But you learn wisdom through your mind. With this process, you will become enlightened. Or Birth of ‘Buddhi’ has taken place. Now the question is whether you got enlightened because of your mind or the teacher. In reality it is both.
